Severe Heatwave Expected During Eid Holidays, Warns PMD

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for a severe heatwave across most parts of the country during the Eid ul Adha holidays and the following week. According to the PMD’s statement on Thursday, a high-pressure system is expected to develop over the country, significantly raising daytime temperatures across various regions.

Rising Temperatures Across the Country

The PMD has predicted that daytime temperatures in the upper half of the country, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, will rise by 5-7°C above normal from June 8 to 12. This surge in temperature will be caused by a high-pressure system gripping these regions, starting on June 7.

Meanwhile, in the southern half of the country, covering upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, temperatures are expected to remain 4-6°C above normal for the same period.

The heatwave is expected to bring dust storms and gusty winds, particularly over the plains, due to excessive surface heating. The Met Office has urged the public to take necessary precautions, including staying well-hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, especially for children, the elderly, and women.

Impact of Rising Temperatures on Water Supply and Agriculture

The rise in temperatures, particularly in northern areas, could accelerate the snowmelt in mountain regions, potentially affecting water flows in rivers. In light of this, the Met Office has urged authorities to ensure responsible use of water and advised farmers to plan their crop activities in line with the forecast to avoid adverse effects.

The public is also advised to stay alert and regularly check for official weather updates for the latest information and guidance to mitigate risks associated with the heatwave.
