Karachi Likely to Experience Mild Earthquakes This Week, Says Chief Meteorologist

Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari announced on Wednesday that Karachi is expected to experience more mild earthquakes this week. However, he rejected speculations of high-intensity tremors in the coming days, reassuring residents that there is no immediate cause for alarm.

In a statement, Laghari explained that the mild quakes occurring in the region are the result of activity along the Landhi fault line, which is currently undergoing an adjustment process. “Karachi has historically experienced earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.8,” said Laghari, emphasizing that the current tremors fall well below these levels.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) chief also noted that mild earthquakes are not an uncommon occurrence. “Millions of small quakes of this nature happen across the world every day, particularly in seismically active areas,” he added.

Since Sunday, Karachi has experienced a series of tremors, with magnitudes ranging from 2 to 3.1. Last night alone, the city was hit by three more mild earthquakes, making it the fourth consecutive day of tremors. The tremors were felt in Karachi’s Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and surrounding neighborhoods, raising concerns among local residents. However, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries.

According to the PMD’s Seismic Monitoring Centre, the total number of tremors felt in Karachi since June 1 has now reached 26. Despite the growing frequency of the earthquakes, Laghari reassured the public that these tremors are relatively mild and are not indicative of more severe seismic activity in the near future.

While the recent tremors have prompted some concerns, Laghari emphasized that predicting earthquakes with precision is not possible for ordinary individuals, even in seismically advanced countries like Japan. “Earthquake predictions are highly complex and cannot be made casually,” he said.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are urged to stay informed through official channels. The PMD and local agencies are working to ensure that the public is prepared in case of any future seismic activity.
